Searchers Switch Tactics Under Increased Mental Load
نویسنده
چکیده
Effects of mental demands on searchers were examined by controlling tasks complexity and by assessing searchers’ working memory span (WM). The searchers were divided into low and high WM group. We expected that on more complex tasks all searchers would perform more searches to find more information. However, only high-WM searchers performed more search actions. Low-WM searchers performed about the same number of searches and switched their tactic by visiting significantly fewer search results.

This study investigated the effects of subject knowledge and search experience on novices’ and experienced searchers’ use of search tactics in online searches. Novice and experienced searchers searched a practice question and two test questions in the ERIC database on the DIALOG system and their use of search tactics were recorded by protocols, transaction logs, and observation. Search tactics ...

In this thesis, besides the developing a bilateral automated negotiation model between agents, in incomplete information state, integrating the personality effects of human on the negotiation process and outcomes, we proposed an architecture of such agents (―buyer‖ or ―seller‖). To do so, a new offer generation approach of three adaptive families of tactics has been proposed as follows: the tim...
متن کاملCognitive Load and Web Search Tasks
Assessing cognitive load on web search is useful for characterizing search system features, search tasks and task stages with respect to their demands on the searcher’s mental effort. It is also helpful in examining how individual differences among searchers (e.g. cognitive abilities) affect the search process and its outcomes. We discuss assessment of cognitive load from the perspective of pri...

A proof is presented to show that, when fitnesses from alternative tactics within a population depend on both their frequency and the phenotypic condition of individuals, there will be a unique ESS switchpoint s* that determines both the condition at which an individual will switch between tactics and the resulting frequency of the tactics in the population. For an individual at the ESS s*, the...
